This is mostly a brain-dump of ideas/suggestions/thoughts/criticism from my studio visit. I was listening/ talking and not taking notes, but scribbled some down at the end. Another post will follow on art made last week and some from over thanksgiving break.
-duck-tape deck of cards case, is good because looks like it is duck-taped closed, hence making an useful thing (cards) frustratingly useless.
-I should look at work by Byron Clercx... the internet was not helpful, although his "rate my professor" page was moderately interesting...
-Justin said again that paddles leaning in a corner with a sign that says please handle /touch, will not cause people to touch them. This question could be answered experimentally with ease.
-(I Think) Daniel suggested I set up a work bench in the gallery and post hours I will be there to answer questions/work and talk. I liked the idea.
-Charles suggested that I hand the paddles to people. (also said that he used to give out money in class)*
-(I think) Daniel suggested I make a "family tree" showing how the different paddlers or paddles (based on wood) are connected to each other. I liked this idea
-Charles (and everyone) wanted me to make paddles for people who don't paddle. One for Justin to surf the web with. **, Charles wanted a circular paddle, but I think he wants a triangular- golden ration paddle
-Charles wanted a paddle that could not be used (hole, half a blade, circular)
-Comment was made that it was really a conceptual piece of art. (although I think that partly because I have not made it yet...)
Thats all I remember for the moment. Maybe more to come. Overall (once we got started) it was enjoyable and helpful. I was pretty nervous at first, but (at least my experience during) unjustifiably so.
*Greg Ogin (a physics prof) throws out quarters for (correct?) answers in class.
