An older theme, but the black text on white was too tempting... much easier to photoshop.
After five and half hours, here are the first decent cards in ink. I would like there to be a real black, but am not sure if that is achievable while maintaining the white white. Rendered as accurately as possible to the real thing:
This negative had to be cleaned twice to remove some goeyness. Some combination of the film base, apple, and darkroom chemistry....yum.
The most recent X-ray negative does not look good, and is inconclusive on the scientific side of things. In the mean time I have opened another project of trying to cozy up to the Geology department so i can borrow their pretty rocks. I was also in the darkroom until 1am (today, but colloquially yesterday), and feel great. Pretty unusual. It Galena, mostly made of lead. Thankfully its softer than glass. (of the scanner)...
other comedy: http://www.adorama.com/US%20%20%20%20486624.html "LCD may be scratched." hmmmm..... what about the ground glass? This image was made on sheet film. I put 3 weeds from outside Reid into a light tight black bag with the sheet film under it (with only the safe light on). The film is sensitive to normal light, gamma rays, and x-rays. I then put this contraption under a glass plate that was spring loaded to press the leaves and film together, and let it sit outside (angled approximately towards the sun) from 3:40 until sunset. I then developed the film in regular developer (its supposed to have its own special developer, but we don't have it) again under the safe-light watching until it looked "good". then into a water bath and into normal fixer for 20 minutes. The package said it could be done in normal fix, but with an extended cycle. Given that the film was stored (from the late 90s) in a cardboard box with two black plastic bags with in it what made this image? Gamma rays go through pretty much everything, and the percent transmitted is roughly proportional to the thickness of the material times its density. One possibility is that it is a true x-ray/gamma ray photogram. Hence the previous storage time there was lots of "stuff" between the film and the sun. Concrete walls of the art building for example. The other possibility is the simple pressure of the leaves gave the silver in the film enough energy to form a latent and then after developing, a full image. (if you crumple up a piece of film enough (with out exposing it to light) and then develop it, there will be some black.) I am hoping it is an x-ray/gamma ray photogram, further experiments will (hopeful) tell.
“It may suffice, then, to say, that the plates of this work have been obtained by the mere action of Light upon sensitive paper. They have been formed or depicted by optical and chemical means alone… that they differ in all respects, and as widely us possible, in their origin, from plates…which owe their existence to the united skill of the Artist and the Engraver.
They are impressed by Nature's hand; and what they want as yet of delicacy and finish of execution arises chiefly from our want of sufficient knowledge of her laws. When we have learnt more, by experience, respecting the formation of such pictures, they will doubtless be brought much nearer to perfection; and though we may not be able to conjecture with any certainty what rank they may hereafter attain to as pictorial productions, they will surely find their own sphere of utility, both for completeness of detail and correctness of perspective.” To make one my jokers I downloaded and used a simple free recursive fractal generator. As usually happens in art this simple need led me to explore a lot more (in what is probably the well worn fractal art world), so here are some other creations: I want to find a recursive generator that can at least a 1000 steps, and has more parameters then the one i used for the jokers, but i have not found said program yet.
