Spent about 4 hours using and figuring out the planner. It will sort-of / almost do what I want it to. Its almost close enough to just go with it but not quite. I can put the paddle in and stop the machine (to only plane the paddle blade, and not thin the handle). Then it develops a ridge were the blades stopped, which is fine. The problem is I want this ridge to be right were the shaft meets the blade. But then the ridge gets caught on the input bar (a good ~5 inches in front of the blade) and creates another ridge, failing to thin the upper quarter of the blade. Nonetheless I did mange to bring it from more than 2 inches thick at the blade to about 1.25 to 1.5 inches thick. (depending on what part). In sum I am eyeing one of these:

In other news I did the opposite of some things I have been doing. Instead of making things are squarely "art" , but I think are bad, I worked on something that I don't (necessarily) think is art, but is defiantly good. It is also a response to the chromophobia reading on "whiteness". (As in, I am in favor or nth patched clothing. In this case 6, there is one on the back).
Chaoyu asked (I think) "Is that a style or..." and either I interrupted him or he left it hanging. (At the time the patches matched my coat). Ellie commented that they looked sad, because of the poor execution of the patch job. I did my best. I think the most arty aspect of the project was the fact that I patched them in public. At a physics candidate lecture, art history class, during physics tutoring, and in the science building. Marin (the woman sitting next to me in the physic lecture, when I started) suggested a curved needle, since I was struggling with a straight one. I followed her advice, which made it easier.
We talked about artist statements in class last week. Many people make a big deal of them. Many (all?) of the ones we read were obtuse and hard to understand. I hope my can be understood by anyone who can read. (As in kids). We shall see if I can also make it interesting for the faculty... Many of the artist statements tried to limit interpretation of the work to one single interpretation. I plan on offering a few different interpretations that I like, but not excluding others.
I have spent a lot time thinking about senior project, as proposals are due for spaces in the Sheehan soon. Also lots of mulling has come to a conclusion. I have a plan of what I want to do, but wish to run it by Charly before putting it out there in its completion. I am meeting with him on thursday morning.
Some photos from the weekend. I am sad that we did not recover all of the pieces, but unfazed by the paddle breaking. Things that are used occasionally break, especially when they are (potentially) poorly made.
